Day Trippin' to Cape Point

On the way back from Swellendam we drove out to Cape Point. We went to see the penguins in Simon's Town and then to see the Cape of Good Hope and the light house at the point.

Hike to Hole in the Wall

On Christmas Day a bunch of us in Coffee Bay woke up bright and early after quite a nite of merry Xmas eve partying put on by the backpackers for all us away from home for the holiday.

Some of the volunteers gathered and made eggs and pancakes for the morning and someone had even brought real maple syrup from New England for the meal.

I had seen pictures of Hole in the Wall in the South African guide books and it looked like a must see, though it was off the shore of a quite remote town. So we hiked 2 hours (what we had been told would be 4 hours - we were all marathoners) to this amazing secluded beach to see The Hole.

We got lost on the hiking trail that led us there but as we marched up one hill breathing heavily, we found 2 small boys who were no older than 11 and 7 who told us in broken English they would show us the way. So we all agreed that would be a good idea and followed the little boys.

I would consider myself in shape, being someone who regularly works out and runs and does yoga, but all us fell behind these two little boys as they ran ahead of us, leaping and jetting across the hills that rippled down the Xhosa coastline. This is maybe why we made it to Hole in the Wall so quickly, those boys set the pace and it was a quick one.

Once we made it to The Hole we were taken back, what natural beauty. It's a small island that jets straight up from the water and has a huge hole in the middle where waves will crash through. Words really won't do it justice.

This is a place to be visited.

We shared our lunch and snacks with the small boys and then rounded up a large quantity of Rands for them to bring home to their families. What a hike!

We ended up sharing a lift back with some people from our backpackers, since our legs felt like jello.

Travel to Coffee Bay

I traveled with Lani from Durban first to Mthatha and then from there we got a shuttle down to the coast to our backpackers in Coffee Bay.

We got to spend the night in a rondevaal and to get to our room from the main building we had to walk across a small little river to the other side where the rondevaal cottages were.

The place had a very hippy laid back feel but it was really nice. The place put us up w some delicious home South African cooked meals in a typical potjie (or 3 legged black iron pot in Afrikaans) and was all very delicious.
